The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers - the largest bankruptcy in history - destroyed shareholders and bondholders alike. Tens of billions of dollars of wealth vanished.

But as we emerge from the rubble, one group is reaping a huge windfall... lawyers.

New York law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges asked a federal bankruptcy judge in New York to approve a $55.1 million payment for its work representing Lehman. That is the largest quarterly fee request made by lawyers representing a bankrupt firm.

One bankruptcy expert estimates Weil will pocket over $200 million by the end of the case. The next-highest bankruptcy counsel fee was the $159 million that went (again) to Weil during the Enron bankruptcy.
