In a recent Forbes interview discussing why he likes his Wells Fargo investment, Warren Buffett said: "We own stock in four banks: USB, Wells, M&T, and SunTrust."
But if you look at Berkshire Hathaway's fourth quarter SEC filing, you'll see Buffett also owns 5 million shares of Bank of America… down from 9.1 million earlier in the year.
Buffett moves markets. And anything he says is scrutinized by the mainstream media, value investors, and millions of Buffett disciples across the world. So when he slips up, people notice. In this case, Buffett forgot to mention the millions of dollars he spent on Bank of America.
CNBC co-anchor Becky Quick called him to clear up the omission. It turns out, Buffett didn't recall his Bank of America position because he didn't directly buy it. Lou Simpson, the independent stockpicker at Berkshire subsidiary Geico purchased the shares.
So Buffett owns stock in five banks... including Bank of America.
