From Dr. David Eifrig in Retirement Millionaire:
I officially hate Southwest Airlines. Longtime readers know that for years, I've been one of Southwest Airlines' biggest proponents. I've flown it for years and even wrote my first business school case study on the airline.
But I'm through with them...
Not only is the website utterly confounding (as I described in my June 2011 update)... But Southwest no longer offers the same great deals it used to. A recent ad for Southwest's newly redone Rapid Rewards program claims the program just got "more rewarding" with "unlimited reward seats."
But the truth is just the opposite. The program has gotten less rewarding. Last year, I could fly 16 times and get a voucher for one round-trip ticket. Under the new program, I can fly 16 times and not even earn enough points for a one-way ticket.
That's because the points are now earned by how much you spend, not how often you fly -- the more you spend, the more points you earn. But this makes it much harder for the average flyer and bargain hunter (like you and me) to earn a free roundtrip flight in exchange for our loyalty. I have essentially stopped flying Southwest.
The stock is already down 14% this year... With this sort of management, website, and marketing, look for it to go to 14-year lows this year. Do what I'm doing and take your loyalty to another airline.
