Yesterday, I met with Representative Timothy V. Johnson (Rep.-IL) to discuss the Citizen Legislator Act for which you received the press release in Tuesday's update.

When I met Johnson in the halls, he was carrying a phone and printout of people's names and phone numbers. He explained that this is a routine for him… he calls some of his constituents just about every day. In this case, the people receiving phone calls from Johnson are from Piatt County, Illinois. Last year, Johnson called about 20,000 people.

I asked, "What do you all talk about?" He said, "I ask them what I can do to be of service to them and how I can make their lives better. Realize, I'm in more regular touch with my constituents than any other member of Congress. And I keep hearing that these politicians are supposed to care about them, but they don't. I've never before seen the degree to which people are angry and want to throw us all out. And quite frankly, they are justified in wanting to get rid of us. People are at the end of their rope in respect to government. We spend too much money, we work in a disorganized way, and in return, Americans get a very poor product… I'm sick of it."

While walking, Johnson continued, "We've lost the whole concept of a citizen's legislature. It was abandoned for larger government. Congressmen and Senators are no longer farmers, teachers, lawyers, and business owners who also serve... Congress is...
