If you want strong muscles, make sure you're getting enough vitamin D.
A study recently published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise
showed that people with higher levels of vitamin D in their blood had stronger upper- and lower-body muscles. This is especially important as you age and lose muscle and bone strength.
But be careful. Don't start loading up on vitamin D supplements... Regular readers know about the dangers of too much vitamin D. Many people can get enough vitamin D naturally... through sunlight and food. And because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, in large doses it builds up over time in your fatty tissues. Too much of it causes kidney failure, kidney stones, and painful muscle spasms.
To make sure you're getting enough vitamin D, take some time to get out into the sunlight and eat foods rich in vitamin D, like salmon and mushrooms. And do what I do... Take 800-1,000 International Units (IUs) of vitamin D once a week or so in the winter.
