T. Boone Pickens has spent $58 million of his own money to promote the "Pickens Plan," a campaign to wean the U.S. off foreign oil... especially oil from the Middle East.
Currently, the U.S. imports around 70% of its oil, up from 24% in 1970, and the figure is growing. Mexico, where the U.S. gets lots of oil, is running out and will soon start importing more itself.
Converting the U.S. to natural gas and wind power will take the power away from oil-producing nations...
"If you don't think we'll see $200 to $300 oil in 10 years, you are kidding yourself," Pickens said. "You think OPEC is a free market? We have no control over what is going on."
Pickens' current goal is to switch 18-wheelers from diesel to natural gas. 20% of every barrel of oil imported to the U.S. goes to fuel for 18-wheelers.
