If you're not sure what America's new fuel efficiency rules mean over the long run, be sure to read the Wall Street Journal's recent opinion piece titled "Car Crazy."

Put simply, the new rules are insane. Detroit has to meet a sky-high 39 miles per gallon on its passenger car fleet by 2016. One big problem here... Americans won't buy fuel-efficient vehicles if gas is below $4 per gallon. It's a U.S. citizen's birthright to burn a ton of fuel all the time. As one GM executive put it, these rules put Detroit "at war with their customers."

The long-term result of all this? More laws will be passed to drive gas prices higher... the government will outlaw some vehicles... taxpayers will continue to prop up Detroit... and Japanese automakers will benefit.
