White House fires watchdog for looking into sleazy cronies

The scandal of the week: The White House just fired Inspector General Gerald Walpin after he turned up dirt on one of the administration's pet projects.

Put simply, Walpin's job was to monitor the use of taxpayer funds that go to non-profits and volunteer programs. He found flagrant misuse of funds by a California non-profit run by former NBA star and Obama supporter Kevin Johnson. The current mayor of Sacramento, California, Johnson has been the subject of several investigations over the years, including one for fondling an underage girl.

It appears Walpin picked the wrong organization to investigate. The funds in question were disbursed by a gov't subsidized program called AmeriCorps… which is a favorite of Obama's inner circle, including the First Lady. It's the fishiest thing from the new administration so far… and the ongoing investigation will be interesting to watch.
