A new study, whereby cameras were placed in semi cabs for 18 months, shows texting on your cell phone while driving increases the risk of collision by a staggering 23 times... far surpassing most other distractions.

The study shows at the moments before or near crash, drivers usually looked at their phones for five seconds - enough time to cover a football field on the highway.

Rich Hanowski, who oversaw the study, says compared to other distractions, texting is "in its own universe of risk."

Tom Dingus, director of the Virginia Tech institute, one of the world's largest vehicle safety research organizations, was even more clear... "You should never do this... It should be illegal."
