General Motors' new Volt electric car could place the hulking, SUV maker back on the map… GM expects its new car to earn a fuel-economy rating of at least 230 miles per gallon in the city - more than four times that of the Toyota Prius.

CEO Fritz Henderson will announce the official mileage numbers today at a new-vehicle exhibition at GM's technical center in Warren, Michigan. And GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz says the volt will receive "a higher number than anyone would expect."

GM says the Volt will cost around $40,000, compared to $22,000 for the Prius.
