Third party certification has been the greatest innovation to hit the coin collecting industry in the last 50 years. However, not all certification companies are created equal, and standards change over time.

A coin graded "about uncirculated" 15 years ago may be MS63-MS64 now (mid grade uncirculated). For some coins this can mean a difference of hundreds or even thousands of dollars in value.

As with any of your investments, do your own homework. If you learn basic information about coin grading yourself before parting with your hard earned money, you will be well ahead of the average coin investor.
