In his third-quarter report, Marty Whitman, famed value investor and manager of the Third Avenue Value Fund, revealed his favorite sectors. Of note for individual investors, Whitman especially likes select Hong Kong blue chips with investments in real estate and private equity, and energy stocks.

Regarding the energy sector, Whitman believes that the long-term outlook for oil and natural gas is quite favorable, despite the terrible short-term fundamentals. His three favorite energy stocks are: Cimarex Energy Co. (XEC), Encana Corp. (ECA), and Nabors Industries (NBR).
