Reason magazine just published a great short article on "hidden taxes."

It focuses on Barack Obama's pledge not to hike taxes on the middle class. But that's income taxes, folks. The government is currently using plenty of sneaky methods to collect higher and higher taxes. Consider the large tax increase on cigarettes, which hits the lower income set particularly hard. Or consider the whopper of hidden taxes, the proposed health care tax. Of course, Obama denies any of these are "taxes." They are "penalties" and "fees."

Obama has the same problem with tax terminology as Bill Clinton had with sex terminology. And after spouting such obvious crap, it's no wonder folks are turning against these ideas like they did in New Jersey and Virginia.
