By David Galland in Casey's Daily Dispatch:
As for the dog’s breakfast of Obamacare now on the table, the Democrats are regularly heard to say that it’s better to pass “something rather than nothing.”
While the idea of creating a safety net to assure that no one is financially ruined, or worse, by a sudden health problem is commendable, the notion that the government should just “do something,” regardless of the costs or consequences, is the sort of thinking that has led to epic levels of government waste in recent decades. Waste that has resulted in generations’ worth of private wealth being flushed down the public toilet.
... Speaking strictly as someone who wants the best for this country, I much welcome the legislative train wreck that just occurred. In fact, it would suit me just fine if the government didn’t pass another piece of legislation for the rest of Obama’s term.
As for universal healthcare, if it is truly the will of the people, then so be it - but don’t have it come about through a rush of backroom dealing.
Instead, use the experience of other countries around the world to identify a system that actually works - or at least almost works - then try to improve on that.
If there’s nothing out there that is sustainable, then be honest enough to look to the free market to provide a better solution - starting by removing the obstacles to cross-state insurance offerings and eliminating a hundred other regulatory barriers that drive health costs up and deliverables down.
